Position Description
The Dispatcher provides ongoing communication support to deputy sheriffs responding to calls and conducting patrols. The Dispatcher is responsible for performing a number of tasks simultaneously while gathering information from often uncooperative and/or emotional callers. The Dispatcher must quickly and effectively calm the caller to obtain necessary information to determine what resources need to be dispatched. The member must be able to take control of situations that may be chaotic, heart-wrenching, stressful, confusing, and frenzied. Their work within emergency response services often places them in the middle of life-or-death situations, so requirements and training for these positions are often stringent, rigorous, and unwavering. The Dispatcher must stay up to date with the latest technology, policies, procedures, and best practices affecting public safety services. The Dispatcher maintains a calm, professional demeanor while handling a variety of emergency and non-emergency calls.

- Dispatch deputies for service calls
- Provide deputies with updates and additional information as it becomes available.
- Requests and responds to outside agencies requests for assistance.
- Completes CAD system entries for service calls.
- Receive requests for watch order checks/extra patrols.
- Correctly differentiate between emergency and non-emergency calls.
- Effectively prioritize calls for service.
- Operate the telephone console/switchboard.
- Ensures the appropriate agency response to the caller or the appropriate members are dispatched to the scene.
- Answer calls in a courteous and professional manner.
- Assist callers as appropriate, determine the nature of a call and transfer the call to the appropriate member.
- Effectively disseminates information received over the National Warning System Terminal from FEMA and the National Weather Service to all appropriate members/agencies.
- Operates NCIC/FCIC computer to standards mandated by state and federal authorities.
- Receive and disseminates accurate information to the authorized members in a timely manner.
- Notifies surrounding agencies of robberies and priority events.
- Maintains accurate and up-to-date communications/dissemination logs.
- Contact the appropriate entity to verify warrants to ensure they are complete, accurate and still outstanding.
- Notify appropriate personnel of applicable information and properly update records.
- Participate in in-house and external trainings to develop specialized knowledge for communications call taking and/or dispatch duties.
- Review bulletins, requests for service and other information received from criminal justice agencies via teletype.
- Promptly take appropriate action as necessary. Routing and dispersing the requests to the appropriate personnel or assigning it to another member for follow-up.
- Receive process or forward all wrecker requests for tow rotation.
- Accurately maintain wrecker files.
- Promptly route calls to the proper authority.
- Accurately track, monitor, and document all deputies and other members’ activities as required during their tour of duty.
Requirements
- 18 years of age or older
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid driver’s license
- Type 20 words per minute
- Obtain State of Florida Public Safety Telecommunicator Certification within one year of hire
Position Description
Under general supervision of a Detention Sergeant, performs work of average difficulty and is responsible for dealing with people under confinement and includes the care, custody, restraint, and general welfare of inmates detained at the Franklin County Jail. The Correctional Deputy generally works an assigned shift at the Jail but may be called upon to continue duties or perform work assigned on other shifts and at other times as directed. Positions require the member to work on rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Work is performed with some independence. Correctional Deputy must be able to exercise good judgment and initiative in handling routine and emergency situations.
Essential Functions
- Care, custody, control, and physical restraint of inmates within a criminal detention facility, while on work detail and while being transported.
- Maintains good order and conduct of inmates.
- Performs daily security inspections of inmates and cell areas for contraband, escape attempts, unauthorized articles, weapons, etc.; searches and removes all unauthorized personal articles and contraband from all inmates.
- Accountable for tools and equipment in area of responsibility.
- Exercises reasonable and/or special care or action in handling special risk inmates.
- Ensures the cleanliness of the area of assigned responsibility; assigns and directs inmates in such work details as required.
- Supervises and interacts with adults, juveniles, male and female to include felons, misdemeanants, sentenced and non-sentenced inmates.
Requirements
- High school graduation or equivalent diploma from an institution accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U. S. Dept. of Education or licensed as a degree granting institution by the Commission for Independent Education.
- Certification of completion of correctional training as required by the State of Florida.
- Meet requirements and standards of the Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission as authorized by F.S.S. 943.13.
- Requires that the member be at least 18 years of age.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Position Description
Under general supervision of a sergeant, or designee, performs general law enforcement work in the preservation and protection of life and property, the prevention of crime, the maintenance of good public order, the enforcement of civil and criminal law, and other related duties as required by direction or assignment. All assignments involve responsibility for recognizing the social importance of the law enforcement function and for conscientious and effective performance of duties without immediate supervision. Incumbent exercises judgment and individual initiative in the performance of routine duties and in emergency situations. Positions require the member to work on rotating shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays. Duties are generally performed on an assigned shift, but the deputy may be called upon to work special assignments, on other shifts, and/or at such times as directed to best fill the efficient and effective operations of the Sheriff’s Office. Work is reviewed through personal observation, inspections, and by discussion and review of reports for adherence to prescribed methods and procedures.
Essential Functions
- Pursuit, apprehension, and arrest of law violators or suspected law violators.
- Patrols assigned areas of the County to preserve public order and tranquility, and to prevent and/or discover the commission of crimes against persons or property.
- Makes arrests and testifies in the prosecution of law violators; conducts preliminary and/or detailed investigations of the commission of crime or law violations.
- Protects the crime scene, gathers and preserves matters evidence, takes and records testimony; directs and coordinates activities on-site unless relieved by a superior officer; assists investigators in specialized investigations.
- Transports arrested individuals to jail and prepares offense and case reports and investigative information for court.
- Serves warrants, capias, court orders and other legal processes; locates and arrests persons wanted on warrants or court orders.
- Enforces the traffic laws and arrests or issues summons to traffic law violators; reports unsafe road conditions; directs the flow of traffic when required; investigates traffic accidents.
- Participates in work involving juveniles, making preliminary and/or detailed investigation and follow-up, referring such cases as needed to Juvenile Court.
- Regular and prompt job attendance.
- Other functions defined by statute or as lawfully directed.
Requirements
- High school graduation or equivalent diploma from an institution accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U. S. Dept. of Education or licensed as a degree granting institution by the Commission for Independent Education
- Certification of completion of law enforcement training as required by the State of Florida.

General Requirements
- Be at least 19 years of age for law enforcement.
- Be at least 18 years of age for corrections.
- Be a citizen of the United States.
- High school diploma or GED (higher education preferred)
- Valid driver's license with good driving record
- Have not been convicted of any felony or of any misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement.
- Have successfully passed a background investigation, including drug testing.
- Have passed a physical examination by a licensed physician, physician assistant, or certified advanced registered nurse practitioner.
- Have good moral character.
All sworn personnel must complete a state-certified law enforcement academy and field training program.
Written exams, physical fitness assessments, and psychological evaluations are part of our selection process.
The entire process can take between 4 to 8 weeks, depending on the position and the applicant.
